Fat Bear Week: Who will be crowned this year’s ‘beefiest bruin’?

In areas where the ice melts in summer they eat some berries and other plant foods during this time. Polar bears are doing well now but some have expressed concern about the potential for global warming to cause reduction in the sea ice of the Arctic Ocean. It is possible that they will be extinct in the wild within the twenty-first century (Nowak 1983; Voelker 1986; Ward 1995; IUCN 2007).

Thank you for visiting Active Wild!

The sloth bear is native to the Indian subcontinent and parts of Sri Lanka. It is a solitary creature that lives in forests and grasslands and feeds mainly on insects and fruits. It has long, shaggy black fur with sparse patches of white or reddish-brown fur. The German city of Berlin and the Swiss city of Bern are named after the bear and feature bears on their coats of arms. In the United States, the black bear is the state animal of Louisiana, New Mexico, and West Virginia; the grizzly bear is the state animal of both Montana and California.

Males are a third larger than females in dimensions and sometimes twice their weight. Males can weigh 100 – 200 kilograms (220 – 440 lb), and females 35 –82 kilograms (77 – 181 lb). Length can range from 120 to 200 cm (47–79 in), with a tail length of a mere 7 cm (2.8 in), and shoulder height from 60 to 90 cm (24–30 in). Compared to other living bears, this species has a more rounded face with a relatively short and broad snout. Except for the carnivorous polar bear and the vegetarian giant panda, ursids are omnivorous, consuming many items that seem small for an animal of such large size. Ants, bees, seeds of trees, roots, nuts, berries, insect larvae such as grubs, and even the dainty dogtooth violet are eaten.

Although carnivores in the sense of being members of the order Carnivora, living species of bears typically have an omnivorous diet. Today, the largest threats to bears are deforestation and human encroachment, and, for polar bears, climate change which is reducing the environment in which they live. On the whole, black and brown bears are holding their own, even though adverse interactions with humans have increased as their habitats become more constricted. Its diet consists almost entirely of meat, especially that of seals. The sloth bear is largely insectivorous (insect-eating), and has a number of adaptations for hunting insects such as termites. Although clumsy in appearance, bears can move surprisingly fast, even through dense cover that would seriously impede a human or a horse.

American black bears love berries and insect larvae when they’re available, and giant pandas mainly eat bamboo, though they’ll also eat small animals. Despite their name, sloth bears are ferociously fast eaters, able to tear a hole in a termite mound, push their noses inside, and inhale a full meal in just a few seconds. Brown bears in Alaska gorge on spawning salmon, plucking them from the water or catching them right out of the air as they jump. The American black bear and brown bear is considered Least Concern and increasing in numbers.

How many species of bears are there?

It is found in North America from Florida to Alaska, although not in all areas of the continent. It occupies a wide range of habitats, from southern forests to northern tundra, and is also found in a range of colors from black to brown to yellow to white. It is medium-sized to large with females weighing 90 to 140 kg (200 to 310 lbs) and males 115 to 270 kg (255 to 600 lbs). Its diet is varied but mostly consists of plant materials over most of its range. Male polar bears sometimes congregate, but otherwise bears are solitary except during the mating season. Then they tend to congregate, pair off, and mate in seclusion.

Many bears relish honey, and the sun bear is sometimes called the “honey bear” because of this. Prey taken by bears includes rodents, fish, deer, pigs, and seals. Grizzlies (a North American subspecies of the brown bear, Ursus arctos) are known for their skillful fishing during the spawning runs of salmon.

Most bears live in forests or semi-wooded areas, with the exception of the polar bear. They often climb trees (except for the brown bear and the polar bear) to find food and to escape from danger. Bears require a good supply of food and water so they are not found in desert areas. They are found in tropical rainforests, in temperate forests, in high mountains, in grasslands, in the tundra, and on the Arctic ice (polar bears). Bears are among the largest land carnivores (members of the order Carnivora), along with the lion and the tiger.

Bear Facts: Do Bears Hibernate?

  • Adult females are slightly smaller by about one-third to one-half of the male’s weight, according to the competition’s website.
  • The Kodiak bear is one of the most iconic bears in the world.
  • Because of their large size, bears have few natural enemies in the wild.

The largest bear is either the Kodiak bear, a subspecies of Alaskan brown bear, or the polar bear, depending upon which measurements are considered. Either of these bears can weigh up to 720 kilograms (1,600 pounds). Despite their solitary nature, these animals have an amazing bear flag vs bull flag display of intelligence and emotions, making them highly respected in the animal kingdom. Kodiak bears live mainly on a diet of fish, roots, and berries, supplemented by larger prey such as deer or elk when available. They have long curved claws that allow them to climb trees and build nests in their branches. Sun bears are solitary creatures for the most part, but will sometimes come together during the mating season.

Spectacled Bear

Size varies greatly depending on geographic location and general food availability. The largest bears, the “Big Browns” exist along the coast of Alaska and Russia growing to very large sizes rivaling that of the Polar Bear. The interior bears of the North American Rocky Mountains (Grizzly Bear) and the mountains of Europe tend to be much smaller. The really big bears (1500pounds/700kg and bigger) are now very rare.Credit -text- Mike McIntosh, photographs of brown bears – Charlie Russell- . Bears such as brown bears and American black bears have extremely varied diets. These species are highly adaptable, able to modify their diets depending on the seasonal availability of food.

  • Bear, (family Ursidae), any of eight species of large short-tailed carnivores found in the Americas, Europe, and Asia.
  • Its ears are small and rounded, and it has long claws for digging.
  • Usually gaining weight beforehand, most bears sleep fitfully through much of the winter, but they do not truly hibernate.
  • Bears living in warm climates also do not deep sleep since food is available for them year round.
  • Giant pandas (Aeluropoda melanoleuca) feed almost exclusively on bamboo shoots and leaves in the central and southern regions of western China.

Threats to Bears

One explanation is that since bears are intensely solitary animals, there’s no room for a human trainer to insert himself into the «dominance hierarchy» as the alpha male. Bears also pursue such varied diets that it would be difficult to keep even a tame population well-supplied. Perhaps most importantly, bears are anxious and aggressive when stressed, and simply don’t have suitable personalities to be house or yard pets. Giant pandas (Aeluropoda melanoleuca) feed almost exclusively on bamboo shoots and leaves in the central and southern regions of western China. These distinctly patterned bears have black bodies, white faces, black ears, and black eyespots.

Their senses of sight and hearing, however, are poorly developed, and most hunting is done by smell. Some, such as black bears and spectacled bears, are strong climbers, and all are strong swimmers, most notably the polar bear. Bears do not generally communicate by sound and usually are quiet, but they do growl at times when feeding, when being challenged by another bear or by humans, and when competing for mates. Bears have been hunted since prehistoric times for their meat and fur; they have also been used for bear-baiting and other forms of entertainment, such as being made to dance. With their powerful physical presence, they play a prominent role in the arts, mythology, and other cultural aspects of various human societies. In modern times, bears have come under pressure through encroachment on their habitats and illegal trade in bear parts, including the Asian bile bear market.

The polar bear (Ursus maritimus) is the largest bear with females weighing 150 to 300 kg (330 to 660 lbs) and males 300 to 800 kg (660 to 1765 lbs). The largest bear ever recorded was a male polar bear, which stood 3.35 meters (11 ft) tall and weighed 1000 kg (2200 lbs). Polar bears live throughout the Arctic and range far out to sea on the sea ice. Their diet is mainly the ringed seal (Phoca hispida), which they catch through the ice.
